Blue Ribbon Winners is the topic of the next Oregon State University Master Food Preservers workshop to be held in Coos Bay at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Saturday, July 13, 2013. The workshop is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and cost is $10. Gloria Dei Lutheran is located at 1290 Thompson Road, off of Koos Bay Blvd.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of prize-winning pies including different techniques and recipes for making pie dough, how to handle the dough, and tips on what makes a pie great. Hopefully each participant will walk away with enough confidence to make an apple pie to enter in the Coos County Fair Apple Pie Contest, the winner of which receives a new stove donated by Daugherty’s Maytag Home Appliance Center in North Bend.
Also on the agenda will be tips for preparing prize-winning preserved foods. Those who hope to enter items in the county fair will appreciate the advice given on how to properly process, prepare and label fair-quality foods by evaluating canned and dried fruits and vegetables, jams and jellies, meat, fish and pickled products. Workshop participants will be asked to bring in samples of their own preserved items, if they wish, for evaluation.
