A little girl with a 'zest for life' is looking for a forever family. KVAL’s Shelley Kurtz introduces you to "Sierra" -- this morning's "Heart Gallery" child.

Shelly Kurtz speaking:

We met Sierra at Brushfire, where you can find an unfinished piece of pottery and make it your own. Sierra told me, she like stars and hearts ....so we looked and looked and then she saw this: (do you think it's a fairy? Yeah, it's a fairy.)

Sierra then selected some of her favorite colors: pink, blue, and lavender....the perfect fairy colors. We settled in at a table and started to paint, and get to know each other. Sierra is 9 years old, and in the 2nd grade. She just moved into a therapeutic elementary school, after a placement with a family didn't work out. She's been having a tough time, as a result, overcoming that loss....but she's moving on.

Case worker speaking:

She's very resilient considering what she's been through and she just knows what she wants and she wants a family that she can love and is going to love her.

Shelly Kurtz speaking:

Sierra reminds me of a real-life Pippi Longstocking....the little girl in children's literature who's resourceful, polite, expresses her needs and advocates for herself.

Sierra's case worker is looking for a family that can make sierra the center of their life...and has access to community services as she settles into her new home.

Case worker speaking:

Somebody who is a skilled care giver, somebody who can advocate for Sierra's needs and someone who can work with Sierra therapy. I'm looking for a home with either a mom or two moms with no other children in the home.

Shelly Kurtz speaking:

It was fun getting to know sierra. She is a smart little girl and although she told me, she has difficulty reading right now, that is one thing she really wants to learn and do well. While some children are tentative or scared about going into a new home, sierra is not.
