Recession proof your career

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Many analysts say the signs are all there and some are starting to use the "R" word -- as in recession. But employment experts say there are some steps you can take right now to help preserve your job and keep your career on track, even if the economy does take a dive.

Darrah Muchoney has a lot that keeps her moving these days. She's a part-time dance instructor. And a full-time high school English teacher. But she didn't start out making lesson plans. Several years ago, Muchoney was laid off from her job as a public relations writer.

"There were signs, but I think you're never really ready for it. I think my first thought was what now?" Muchoney told Ivanhoe.

Job search expert Chris Posti Tice hears that question a lot. Posti Tice says the signs of a recession are looming, it may not be long before businesses start to cut workers.

"This is the time to be a model employee, if you're at all concerned about losing your job. This is not the time to be a complacent, Average Joe," Posti Tice told Ivanhoe.

Posti Tice says there are changes you can make today that may preserve your job during a downsizing. Now is the time to be a star. Volunteer for special projects; make sure your bosses see you engaged in your work. Keep learning -- an additional degree or certificate makes you more valuable especially if you show your savvy for technology or international affairs. Posti Tice says companies will work hardest to keep their stars and team players during a downsizing.

Sometimes, cuts happen anyway. In Darrah Muchoney's case, the layoff gave her an extra push to make a career change.
