Bay Area celebrates National Night Out

NORTH BEND, Ore.-- Thousands of residents came out to Ferry Road Park on Tuesday night to get better acquainted with their local law enforcement officers.

North Bend Police, with the help of other jurisdictions, held their 13th annual National Night Out event.

"I think we've got everybody encompassed here," Detective Jon Bohanan, North Bend Police Dept. said "We've included Hauser and Lakeside patrol, and the Coos County Sheriff and Coos Bay Police Departments have shown up. We've anticipated the Oregon State Police will be here."

The event is meant to be a block party in which people have the chance to meet police officers face-to-face and build a relationship with the people in uniform.

"It also lets the public know that we're approachable, and that we're people that you came come to and voice concerns you have from dog problems to setting up neighborhood watch programs in your certain neighborhoods," Bohanan said.

In addition to live entertainment, those who attended were able to have a hands-on experience with police equipment, and they were also treated to free hot dogs, drinks and crime prevention techniques such as free fingerprinting for children.

Many local companies stepped up to donate all of the supplies needed.

National Night Out is a nationwide event held by law enforcement agencies across the country. The event nationally is more than 30 years old.
