CB schools kicks off free lunch program

COOS BAY, Ore.-- Three Coos Bay schools now are offering free lunch to all children up to the age of 18.

Beginning the first week in July through mid-August, Blossom Gulch and Madison Elementary School and Marshfield High School will all serve meals to any child who shows up between 11:15 a.m. and noon.

"Coos Bay School District has been contracting with Sodexo to provide meals for kids each year for more than 30 years," Coos Bay Food Service Director Sid Hall said in an e-mail. "We have learned through our contact with students during the school year just how important school meals are for students to get the nutrition that their growing bodies need to be physically and mentally healthy. To make sure the students continue to get the nutrition they need Coos Bay School District has been participating in the summer lunch program."

Hall says children do not need to be enrolled in Coos Bay Schools to recieve the meals.

Though the program serves around 200 children a day, there are still people who don't know about the program.

"A lot of people don't know we're here, and if you don't know about us that's a shame," said Candice Cabudol, Sodexo Food Server at Blossom Gulch Elementary. "Cause if we're offering something, you might as well come and take it."

In addition to a cold sandwich and chips option being offered, there is a hot lunch option that changes daily.

Cabudol says the menu is just like a regular school day's lunch menu.

Adults may also eat the food, but it is $2.00 per meal per adult.
