County Gov't Changes: ARRRG misses personal deadline, still within legal one

NORTH BEND, Ore.-- A citizens group attempting to gather enough signatures to place the Home Rule Charter before Coos County voters this fall says it has missed a personal deadline to collect signatures.

Three representatives for Americans for Responsive, Responsible, Representative Government, ARRRG, told KCBY off-camera that they are making a last-minute push throughout the county to collect signatures to get the Home Rule Chater on the ballot.

ARRRG set a deadline last month of August 1st to have enough signatures collected, but the group has now decided to go down to the wire and get more signatures before its August 8th legal deadline.

The group did not say whether or not they had collected enough signatures, but one representative said they are pushing for more.

"We want everyone to have a chance to sign the petition who wants to sign," Rob Taylor, ARRRG member said. "We have places all around the county where people who haven't signed up yet may do so."

At one point during a public hearing for a ballot ordinance on Wednesday, two ARRRG members asked the Coos County Board of Commissioners to place the Home Rule Charter on the ballot for the group, but ARRRG organizer Ronnie Herne then told the board that they will attempt to gather more signatures and thought it was a mistake that members asked for the boards help at Wednesday's meeting.

Though the group can collect signatures for two years, ARRRG members have said it is now or never for the measure to be placed on the ballot.

If ARRRG can not collect enough signatures by August 8th, they will not be able to place the Home Rule Charter on the November ballot.
