Forest patrol will no longer issue burn permits during fire season

BANDON, Ore.-- The Coos Forest Patrol says beginning this summer, burn permits will no longer be issued during fire season.

Derwin Boggs, Coos Forest Patrolmen, says the organization is trying to balance its budget while also dealing with the dangers of the upcoming fire season.

"Our fire calls that we do get a lot of times are from burn barrels or false alarms that we respond to with our equipment," Boggs said. "And this very costly to do so we've decided not to issue burn permits which means during fire season there will be no burning at all."

Boggs says the time and money spent on those calls will now be reinvested in better training for staff members.

For years, Coos County was one of the only counties issuing burn permits during fire season, but there are some excpetions.

Boggs says farmers and grazers are allowed to burn under state law.
