Local swimmers cross the bay

Local swimmers cross the bay
NORTH BEND, Ore. -- Nineteen people squeezed into their wetsuits and caps for the second annual "Across the Bay Swim" on Saturday.

At first the fog was heavy and they even talked about not swimming across, but by noon, the fog cleared and ten swimmers and nine paddle-boarders were ready to go.

Amy Burgess frequently swims in the bay, but this is her first time crossing it.

She said, "It was a little choppy, but the water was great and really good to have the kayaks and the canoe people there to guide our way."

Despite strong winds and rough water, they all made it from the Empire docks to the North Spit and back.

This group was made up of local open-water swimmers and was much bigger than last year.

Retired Marshfield High School swim coach Ralph Mohr organizes this event.
