Fire kills man in Coos Bay

COOS BAY, Ore. - A house fire killed a Coos Bay grandfather on Wednesday.

Mike Tavernier died in the fire. He had been living in a trailer on a friend's property for about a year.

The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. Witnesses reported flames lept 20-30 feet from the trailer.

The fire department said the fire was caused by an open flame of some kind.

Andrew Evans, a friend of Tavernier's for 30 years, said his friend was a father and grandfather.

Evans plans to organize a gathering in Tavernier's memory.

"The flames were so hot, I just had enough time to get my car backed out of the way for the fire department to get here and it was too late, we couldn't get him out," Evans said.
