Paddling to protect the bay

COOS BAY, Ore. -- 65 paddle-boarders, kayakers and canoists showed up for the second annual "Stand Up for the Bay" community paddle on Saturday.

Participants started at the Coos Bay boardwalk and paddled five miles along the bay. The Coast Guard Auxiliary followed close by.

Surprisingly, there were no casualties and everyone stayed completely dry.

After the paddle, there was a luau with music, food and mimosas.

Carmen Matthews organizes this event. He said, "the boardwalk that we have here is such a great tool for our community to be able to use for public spaces, music and events, and so we just were really hoping that we could focus on all of the great things we have down here."

The event is sponsored by the local Surfrider Foundation chapter. The organization is committed to keeping coastal waters healthy.

The $1,300 raised goes to clean water testing, beach cleanup materials, and a scholarship fund for a local student interested in environmental studies.
