Preservation Group: 'Egyptian Theatre Open Again in 2014'
COOS BAY, Ore.-- The Egyptian Preservation Association says it has a plan to get the doors to the Egyptian Theatre open again by 2014, but it needs the help of the public.
The downtown landmark was not only closed in 2005 when Coming Attractions Theaters pulled out of the site, but supporters of the theater were hit with a double-whammy that year when the building was declared unstable for people to be inside of it, especially during a significant seismic event.
The preservation association said it has completed the consulting phase of the theatre, and now it is time to raise the money to make the needed repairs.
The group displayed a newly painted obelisk on a nearby building that will be a progress marker as more funds are being raised.
Coos Bay Mayor Crystal Shoji said the reopening of the theatre would be a much-needed boost for downtown Coos Bay.
"The Egyptian Theater is really important because it's the one of the foundations of the downtown, and getting it open helps the restaurants, helps the businesses has a gather place downtown," Shoji said. "It's really a sentimental thing to a lot of people so we're really excited."
The preservation association will hold multiple fundraising events at the end of this year and in 2013.
On October 18, 2012 at noon, you can hear more from the Egyptian Preservation Association about their plan to reopen the theatre on KCBY at Noon's People at Noon segment.
