SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A man in a car stolen from Arizona with license plates stolen from Roseburg led police on a 100 mph chase on Interstate 5 and through several Springfield neighborhoods on Wednesday.

The sheriff's office arrested Jeff L. George, 30, a former Springfield resident, on a warrant out of Arizona state.

The incident started just before 10:30 a.m. when Lane County Sheriff’s Deputy Gordon Gill and Josh Mars, a deputy in training, spotted a suspicious vehicle near the 30th Aveneue interchange with Interstate 5. Gill ran a computer check on the plates and learned they had been reported stolen from the Roseburg area.

As the deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled south on Highway 99 to Creswell, then north on Interstate 5 at speed in excess of 100 mph.

The car exited I-5 at the Glenwood ramp and continued toward Springfield, traveling through several neighborhoods in Springfield and as far north as Centennial Boulevard before coming back through downtown.

Officers from the Springfield Police Department used spike strips on Mill Street near D Street to flatten one of the tires on the fleeing vehicle.

The tire disintegrated, and the car was driving on the rim before stopping on 19th Street, north of Main Street.

George then fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by a Springfield Police K-9 unit. George was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated for injuries related to resisting the police K-9.

Deputies later learned the car was reported stolen Aug. 24 from Phoenix, Ariz., and that George had an Arizona arrest warrant.

Two local women who were passengers in the car were briefly detained before being released.
