With the anniversary of September 11th looming ahead, veterans groups and community members prepare for "stand down," a day dedicated to veterans in need.

Located at the Coos Bay Fire Department in Empire, a wide range of services and veterans organizations will be present.
A BBQ, free haircuts, medical care and tons of donated Department of Defense gear will be available.

Mark Winders, a Vietnam vet says, "its a wonderful opportunity for them top come out of the woods, come out of their bunkers and come down and see what's available to them. There's a lot of caring organizations in this community and we're all gonna gather here."

Winders says this is the first time a "stand down" event has taken place in Coos Bay, and the organizations involved hopes to make it a tradition.

He says it makes sense to hold an event like this on the eve of September 11th.

"It is an opportunity on this day that we as Americans reach out to our veterans and meet their needs in any way that we can," says Winders.

"Stand down" will take place on Friday, September 10th at the Coos Bay Fire Department off Cape Arago Highway.
