NORTH BEND, ORE - For many, the Labor Day weekend is a good way to end the summer with a three day break, but for others it is a way to remember the people who keep the country running strong.

Labor Day picnics, like the one at Ferry Road Park in North Bend, accomplish both as they honor and celebrate the holiday.

The Southwestern Oregon Central Labor Council put on the 31st Labor Day picnic, which was coordinated by UFCW Local 555 and the IBW Electricians Local 932.

The numbers of attendees appeared to many to be up this year, particularly young families enjoying the kids games, food and music.

But attendees also had the opportunity to rub elbows with politicians like State Senator Joanne Verger and Representative Arnie Roblan, who were joined by U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley. They all took turns speaking to the crowd and sending the message that the current level of unemployment in Oregon was unacceptable.

"It's jobs that create revenue so families can afford to buy products in the community and create other jobs," said Merkley. "Because if we don't start creating jobs then we are going to be locked in this recession for a very long time."

He went on to suggest that one way to create jobs would be more low-cost loans for energy renovations, which would help to increase construction jobs.

The picnic also fed the hungry in more ways than one, as it collected food items to be delivered to the South Coast Food Share.
