Coquille - The federal government gives the Coos County Sheriff's Department a little boost with their equipment in the new year, helping them keep up with the 20th century and do their job better.

After applying for it in the beginning of 2007, the Coos County Sheriff's Office recently received a grant just under $12,000 from the Department of Homeland Security.

The office is among 22 cities and counties in the state to receive money.

It will be used to purchase their second thermal imaging device, which detects body heat, and will serve useful for criminal investigations and search and rescue efforts.

"For instance, we recently had a search of a lost person on the BLM property, and if we had the unit at that particular night, we might have been able to find that person sooner," says Sheriff Andy Jackson.

In the new year, the Coos County Sheriff's Office is also looking at upgrading their radio systems including one that will allow them to work with the seven counties in the southern part of Oregon.
