"Chess is more than just a board game"
By Brie Thiele, KCBY NewsCOQUILLE, Ore. - A living board game livened up Coquille, as local celebrities and young chess players celebrated National Chess Day! It may have been dreary in the bay, but it was beautiful out in Coquille. The sun shining down on a chalk-drawn chess board, which came to life in the Figaro Pizza parking lot. The chess clubs of Myrtle Point, Coquille, Coos Bay and North Bend came together with familiar faces like KCBY's own Tim Novotny and Coquille Police Chief Janice Blue to play a live game of chess. One local mother who's children play chess, tells KCBY, it's more than just a board game. Studies have shown children who play chess are good critical thinkers, and the game teaches them about sportsmanship and dignity. Many of these kids are heading to the All Stars Invitational Only Chess Tournament at the Salem Capitol building this Friday. To be invited, players had to place in the top ten for their grade during the last year. Coquille had 20 invited, Coos Bay had two and Myrtle Point had one. Up next for the chess teams is an event on November 5th at Coquille High School. Coquille will host the Byron Massey Memorial Adult and Scholastic Chess Tournament. Everyone is invited. Most Popular
