Coos Bay - Coos Bay Police now have a new eye on things so to speak, as a new device is recently installed in all patrol cars that will help assist in traffic stops.

Twelve new in car digital video camera's and monitor's by the manufacturer ICOP, were installed this week, paid for by money set aside from the city's 2007 budget year.

These new devices replace an older model video camera system, and has all digital features.

"We've had video cameras in the past but they were all VHS and recorded to video tape. These new one's are digital, and put all video and other information onto a hard drive. You can use it for a traffic stop or a D-U-I-I investigation. After you're done with the stop, you can punch information onto screen like the ticket number and other things which get put onto the hard drive," says Captain Gary McCullough.

McCullough adds that the main difference between the old and new system is that it will allow for more efficiency during traffic stops including providing more accurate data and footage.

"It's not only protecting police but citizens as well. If someone calls up and complains that an officer was out of line, I can pull that video up and either confirm or deny it."

McCullough says they are also hoping to receive mobile data terminal computers that are hooked up to local dispatch in every car by the end of the year.
