Graffiti problem reoccurring in Coos Bay

By Azenith Smith

COOS BAY - While it may not seem like a big problem, it's becoming quite a nuisance for many downtown businesses and even the school district, as a rash of incidents involving graffiti hit Coos Bay.

An alley in downtown is just one of many spots, where newly sprayed graffiti can be found on the building walls.

According to the Coos Bay Police Department, on Thursday morning, they received 13 separate complaints of graffiti on various properties in downtown and in Empire, including several businesses, Sunset Middle School and the ESD Building.

One of the businesses, Tower Ford, just painted their wall that had graffiti on it.

Workers say, that while it doesn't happen very often, when it does, it costs them time and money to clean it up.

"Probably in the bigger picture, it's a small thing to consider as far as crime-wise, but it still doesn't look good on our buildings for downtown and for our people going through it," says Matt Larson of Tower Ford. "The nice thing about ours was that it's in the alley so it wasn't on the front, but still, for other businesses, it's unsightly."

Coos Bay P.D. says there are similarities with the tagging work for all the incidents, so they believe, it is one person or one group that's involved.

They're currently developing leads, but are asking the public's help with their investigation.

"Obviously to report criminal behavior and if they have any information or suspect, we would love that information for our current investigation," says Michael Shaffer of Coos Bay Police.

They also encourage any parties, who have graffiti on their properties, to paint over them right away to discourage this problem from reoccurring.
