Local group celebrates Israel's 60th birthday

NORTH BEND - It's a country that's seen it's share of turbulent times but has managed to stay strong through it all, now the local community is rallying together to support 60 years of Israel's independence.

On Thursday, community members gathered to celebrate Israel's 60th birthday.

The group behind the idea, "Standing With Israel," has been bringing together people of all denominations and affiliations to educate them on the important role Israel plays in today's society.

"A lot of people don't know much about the country or have wrong information. Since it's 60 years since Israel became a modern state again, the Jews are re-settling in their homeland, we are celebrating this event," says Standing With Israel founder Lilo Isenburg.

The group is not a religious organization, but rather a group where people can come to celebrate and support Israel.

In addition to the birthday celebration every year, the group also holds a picnic every August and on-line discussion groups.
