Weyerhaeuser's Coos Bay Timberlands receives top safety award

COOS BAY TIMBERLANDS - Known as one of the more dangerous professions, logging employees with Weyerhaeuser prove that safety is their number one priority when on the job.
Recently Weyerhaeuser's Coos Bay Timberlands operation was selected within a group of work-sites across the state for their high level of safety and excellence. Oregon's Occupational Safety and Health Division or OSHA, awarded "VPP Merit" status to Weyerhaeuser's Coos Bay Timberlands tree farm, making it the first full-scale logging operation in the nation to receive this recognition. Weyerhaeuser Coos Bay Team Leader Bob Wallace says to achieve VPP Merit status, the work-site has to have an average injury and illness rate at or below rates of other employers. OSHA also looks for 18 elements during the review process including safety and health training, emergency programs and drills, and preventative maintenance among others. Everyday, 32 employees as well as 200 contractors work on the Coos Bay Timberlands, which includes everything from logging to clearing roads. |
