COOS BAY - With the removal of the New Carissa shipwreck approaching, the Department of State Lands is working on addressing a big potential environmental impact.

According to Steve Purchase, the Assistant Director of the Department of State Lands, although the Coast Guard did certify the ship clear of any contaminants, the DSL does have an oil spill response plan in place, just in case.

They are hoping to minimize any impact on the beach and the current Snowy Plover nesting season.

The plan includes hiring two full time people to monitor the beach for any oil spill during the removal process, with clean-up equipment nearby.

They also have a six-member response team in Coos Bay to deal with it immediately.

Purchase says, so far, that is their main environmental concern. No other issues were brought up during the permitting process, he says.
