All major pieces in place for Carissa removal to begin
Removal of the new Carissa wreckage begins next week. By Azenith Smith
COOS BAY, Ore. - It's taken several months, but now the time has come: all major pieces are in place for the removal of the New Carissa shipwreck to begin.
New pictures of the second barge, Karlissa B, reveal that it's now jacked up parallel to the stern of the New Carissa. CLICK ON VIDEO ICON It will be used along with the other barge, the Karlissa A, to remove the wreck. On Wednesday, the Karlissa B left the dock in Empire at around 11 a.m. and arrived at the wreck site around 2 p.m. David Parrot of Titan Maritime said, they encountered no difficulties in moving it, and it's arrival marks a major milestone for them to start the removal. It's coming later than they anticipated as the delivery of the barge was delayed due to recent high winds and large swells, but they had a break in the weather and were able to take advantage of it. As of Thursday morning, both barges were in position, jacked up approximately 53 feet above water. A steel gangway connects both of them, allowing access from one barge to the next. The Karlissa B does have a bigger crane and will be used to cut and remove the wreck. The Karlissa A has the smaller crane and more open space to store pieces. However, before they begin, Titan personnel will be attending several federal and state safety training courses in the next few days. Cutting and disassembling of the wreck is scheduled for early next week. |
