Horizon Air pulling out of North Bend and Klamath Falls
By Tim NovotnyNORTH BEND - Horizon and the Coos County Airport District are confirming that the airline is pulling out of the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, effective October 11th of this year. Horizon currently serves the Bay Area with four round-trip flights to Portland each day, with an estimated 70,000 passengers passing through each year. In a press release KCBY received Friday afternoon, they say that "despite our best efforts to adjust flight schedules and fares in order to make these routes financially viable, the astronomically high fuel prices have only made the situation worse." They also say that they are transitioning from the use of the Q-200 aircraft to the highly fuel efficient Bombardier Q-400's. In a separate press release from the Executive Director of the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport, Gary LeTellier says that "Though disappointed, we understand that Horizon's management is being forced to restructure the airline relative to the current economic downturn and the rising cost of fuel." Airport Board Chairman Mike Lehman says they are already in talks with Sky West Airlines to see if they will expand their two flights a day, which don't even begin until July 7th, as well as possibly open new northbound routes. Horizon will also be ending their round-trip flights from Portland to Klamath Falls. Most Popular
