Merkley pays visits to South Coast
By Azenith SmithCOOS BAY - Marking his first bid for a seat in the U.S. Senate, Oregon Democratic candidate Jeff Merkley makes a campaign stop in Coos Bay on Tuesday. It's part of his 100 town tour for change, where he's visiting towns all across the state. Merkley, who's from Roseburg and the current House speaker, spoke at the Coos Bay Rotary Club and addressed the need for family wage jobs and affordable health care. He also touched on investing in transportation, which he says, is critical to the economy in the Bay Area. "The rail line, the Port facilities and the aircraft terminal," says Merkley. "These things are just incredibly important to invest in nationally and to have a good federal partner for. There's no foundations for family, good living wage jobs." Merkley also shed light on the recent salmon closure and his thoughts on how to help out the coastal communities. "We need to invest federal resources in strengthening the salmon and coastal fishing economy," says Merkley. "It's incredibly important when we have projects like wave energy projects. We need to make sure they are placed in a way that doesn't interfere with fishing." The stop in Coos Bay marked town 13 on his tour. He also made stops in Bandon and North Bend on Tuesday and will be in Lakeside and Reedsport on Wednesday. To be fair, KCBY did contact Merkley's opponent, Gordon Smith's office, to see if Smith had any plans to visit the Bay Area, but no plans were given. Most Popular
