COOS BAY - An unexpected and much needed donation from employees working at two local Safeway stores will go a long way to help fund the South Coast Head Start program.

On Tuesday, South Coast Head Start Director Dale Helland received a check from the Safeway Foundation in the amount of $2,236.

The money was raised by local employees of the Coquille and Myrtle Point Safeway stores, who contribute part of their paycheck each month to the foundation and then choose which non-profit they would like to support.

"It was totally unexpected, they've had such a nice relationship with our staff out there and they understand the need that our families and children have," says Helland.

The money will go into Head Start's general fund, but will be used primarily to support food budgets.

Helland says this is one of many donations and grants they've received throughout the year.

South Coast Head Start is a program of Oregon Coast Community Action.
