Caddies shine at first annual Bandon invitational
A Eugene man's discovery in his box of golf balls gives him a shot a teeing it up with Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds reaches the mountain top, and reports from Ducks and Beavers fall camps. By Azenith SmithBANDON - Local caddies get the chance to show off their skills at the 1st Annual Fourth of July Bandon Invitational over the weekend. This year, 25 teams, 11 of them made up of caddies, signed up for the 54-hole event held at Bandon Crossings. Assistant Golf Professional Chris Young says, area caddies suggested the idea since Fourth of July weekend is often a slow time for them and they thought it would be a good way to bring the community together. "The caddies represent us well out here," says Young. "On their off time, they come out here. They'll pay a bunch out here, so again, it's a time to give back and say thanks for them." And it's events such as these that help promote the fairly new golf course, which is nearing its one year anniversary soon on July 18. So far, Young says, it's been a successful year, having set themselves apart as the affordable alternative to Bandon Dunes. "It was a really busy winter for us," says Young. "The golf course drained so well with all the rain that it's one of a few golf courses in the area that's playable during the winter time. Business has been good now that summer is here." They've also received some national recognition being named one of the top 10 new golf courses in America by Golf Magazine. And they're in the running for Golf Digest's poll, which comes out later this year. Next up for them is a "Golf for Health Classic" on Aug. 2, which is a fundraising tournament to benefit Southern Coos Health Foundation. Most Popular
