Kids improve golf game for free at Bandon Dunes
By Azenith Smith
BANDON - Learning from the pros, young kids from all over the Coast try their luck on the green at an annual free golf clinic, thanks to a local Indian tribe.
About 85 kids, ranging in age from seven to 18, attended the 6th Annual Youth Golf Clinic at Bandon Dunes on Thursday. It's an annual event, sponsored by the Coquille Indian Tribe, that gives young children the opportunity to pick up some golf tips and interact with their peers. "It's something you can learn to do all your life," says Tribal Council Chairman Ed Metcalf. "You don't have to be a great athlete to play it. Some kids may not be able to do it if it wasn't for this." Participants say, they appreciate the professional advice and being able to improve their golf game with the pros. "It's just a cool feeling that you are being taught by a professional," says Participant Taylor Marchant. "They have sacrificed their time to come and help you to improve your game. Some people have different styles of golf so they'll share those with other people." With the help of numerous community sponsors, the tribe is also hosting their annual adult golf fundraiser tournament at the Coos Country Club in Coos Bay on Saturday. Proceeds from the tournament will help send 20 kids to a golf camp at a country club later this month. |
