Charleston Fire Department turned into vehicle crash scene for exercise
By Kristina Nelson
CHARLESTON - Brushing up on their rescue skills, a group of local firefighters test out the latest in extraction equipment in real life car crash scenarios.
Charleston Fire Department turned into what looked like a major crash scene Wednesday night, as firefighters from a couple rural departments got a chance to pull dummy's from smashed in vehicles. The exercise, done four times throughout the year, provides the firefighters with different crash scenarios, and allows them to use the latest equipment. "We have Rescue Randy over there in the first car, and we're gonna move him from car to car, getting him out just like a regular person on a backboard," says Charleston firefighter and instructor Dewayne Forrest. Forrest says the training is especially important for many rural fire departments who might not see as many vehicle crashes. He says it's also vital for his firefighters. "It's intense training. Our department does it a lot because we have a very busy Cape Arago Highway right here. But it's something everyone needs to brush up on. It just gives us a real life scenario for any kind of accident, rollovers, stuff like that." All the vehicles were donated by 101 Auto Salvage and were smashed in before the training. |
