COOS BAY - Providing clothing, toys and school supplies to children who have virtually nothing, a local non-profit group partners with the Department of Human Services to supply special backpacks filled with goods, but they need your help.

All this week, the Bay Area Soroptimists, DHS and community partners are holding their annual "Backpack for Kids Project."

They are asking for the community to help donate items including new clothes, hygiene items, school supplies, infant supplies, books and underwear to their cause.

"DHS came to us and said, 'we need your help, we have kids who are taken into foster care, taken out of their homes with nothing besides the clothes on their backs," says Soroptimist President Nicole Hoffman.

The backpacks go to kids currently in foster care who were taken out of abuse or drug-related situations.

Hoffman says they already have the backpacks, they just need items to fill them.

And she adds, the backpacks, which are distributed to around 36 children every year, go a long way in making them feel more at home.

To donate items, simply drop them off at the North Bend or Coos Bay Fire Stations, or either Bay Area Bi-Mart store.

There will be bins located at the front of these locations through this Saturday, September 6th.
