NORTH BEND - What started as a simple trip to donate blood for one North Bend woman, turned into her lucky day, winning $1,500 all for giving back.

Carol Henley, a longtime donor, received some good news last month, when she found out she was the recipient of a $1,500 gift card from Lowe's.

While donating blood earlier this summer, Henley signed up for the drawing, not thinking much of it.

"I had been called on a Friday and I had donated the Thursday before. My first thought was 'oh no, something is wrong with my blood.' But when I found out I was the winner, I was flabbergasted," says Henley.

All summer long, the American Red Cross teamed up with Lowe's for a promotional campaign called "Improve Lives, Improve your Home."

Red Cross Territory Representative Melissa Smith says Henley was one of over 1,000 entrants from across the Pacific Northwest that signed up to win.

"The odds of her winning were kind of slim, but we're so elated to have a winner here in our own community."

Henley says she donates blood every six weeks, and hopes incentives like this one will bring others out to do the same.
