A square off for State Representative

COOS BAY, Ore. - With all the hype of the 2008 Presidential election, especially here in Oregon during the primary, local voters are now turning some of their attention to the state candidates running for office.

After an unsuccessful run in 2006, Republican Al Pearn is back at it again, racing against incumbent representative Arnie Roblan for the State Representative, District-9 seat.

The Coos County League of Women Voters welcomed the two candidates Wednesday night for a public debate. In what was intended to be a debate between current issues, Pearn directed most of his comments at Roblan's downfalls during his past four years in office. Most of the disagreements pertained to the hot topic of economic spending.

Roblan started out by saying, "We did do something last session that made it a little bit better and that was stat a rainy day fund for the first time in the history of our state. So there are some resources, but unless you can create jobs and bring income in, we're going to have to tighten our belt."

Pearn responded with, "They had $2 billion more to spend, they spent every dime of it. And now we have down turn and now we're going to have to restrict programs in some way."

Voters looking to find more on Pearn and Roblan, as well as all other state and local candidates running for office, are encouraged to pick up a voters booklet at any state office, or go to the Coos County League of Women Voters website at www.votesource.org.
