Time is running out to submit LNG comments to FERC
By Erica Rush
NORTH BEND, Ore. -Time is running for both LNG opponents and proponents to submit their final questions to FERC, before they move forward with any of the proposed Oregon terminals.
Concerned citizens about the proposed Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal on Jordan Cove came out Monday night to understand the best way to draft a comment to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. FERC issued a preliminary Environmental Impact Statement to the public last August and now it's up to the community to comment on the findings and send their questions and concerns back to the commission before a final EIS is released. Ron Sadler, who's had experience in the federal sector and the National Environmental Policy Act, was called in to help sift through the current EIS. "It's much too complex, much too verbose. It leaves out a lot of key elements like the need for the LNG project, a meaningful analysis of alternative ways to meet that need and that fact makes commenting all the more difficult," said Sadler. Sadler, who has flagged this two volume document with what he calls "procedural defects," says it's just as important to be aware of these issues whether you're for or against the LNG terminal. "All these procedural defects have the potential to hold up the project, assuming it is eventually approved by FERC. So there ought to be an equal level of interest in the procedural defects list among the people who favor LNG." Written comments are being accepted until Dec. 4, at which time FERC will compile them to complete a final EIS, scheduled for early February. |
