North Bend, Coos Bay waterfront projects discussed at IBO Lunch
By Kristina Nelson, KCBY News
NORTH BEND, Ore. - Even though the economy is in the tank, plans for development on the North Bend and Coos Bay waterfront are still a go, with five different projects in various stages of development.
The projects were the topic of discussion at the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce IBO Luncheon at the Mill Casino-Hotel On Wednesday. The five developments are all located on the Highway 101 corridor and would be eventually connected by a walking path beginning in North Bend to downtown Coos Bay. The projects include the North Bend Boardwalk, which City Administrator Jan Willis says should be under construction by fall of this year. "We've already been approached by a business owner that would like to put a waterfront restaurant attached to the boardwalk. We think that this will stimulate the economy and in turn create more jobs," says Willis. Projects that are still in the early development stages include Ced-Co's Ko-Kwell Wharf Project. Down the road, there are plans for the Eastwood Development across from the Red Lion Hotel, which would include condos and retail space. Next door will be the new home Coos Historical and Maritime Museum, as well as a new Sause Bros. commercial building. "Our shared objective is not a physical object but a quality of experiences that, that physical object will help create," says Coos Historical and Maritime Museum Executive Director Anne Donnelly. Funds and plans have been drawn up for each of the projects. But the North Bend Boardwalk is the farthest along toward completion. |
