Recent offshore and inland quakes not connected

COOS BAY, Ore. -With all the earthquake activity last week and over the weekend, KCBY News spoke with a local geologist to see if these quakes were connected and what that means for us here inland.

Last Thursday, it was reported a small quake of 4.1 magnitude ruptured just 25 miles Southeast of Powers.  This was followed up with two similar sized quakes 121 miles West of Bandon over the weekend.  While both were likely caused by the collision of North American and Juan de Fuca Plates, Geology Professor at Southwestern, Ron Metzger tells us they have actually little to do with each other.

"The distinction here I think is that in a close timing we've had the small off shore event as well as a small deep even in the subducting plate," says Metzger.  "So it's two different things that are both part of the Juan de Fuca but kind of independent as well."

Now these quakes were generally mild, but it's not to say that the coast couldn't experience a more dangerous eruption, especially with a one in seven chance of Great Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake within the next 50 years.

It's information not meant to concern you, but rather to prepare you.

According to Metzger, "The biggest thing is a sense of awareness and then being prepared.  Having food, water, shelter.  Basically having earthquake survival kits."
