MYRTLE POINT, Ore. - Students at one South Coast elementary school have learned the importance of giving back, helping kids with cancer, one coin at a time.

During February, the students at Myrtle Crest Elementary in Myrtle Point, were asked to bring in coins to help raise money for the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program, at Doernbecher Hospital in Portland.

Their goal was $1,000 and on Friday the students found out they well exceeded it, raising over $2,000 for the program.

And as an incentive to raise the money, three teachers promised they'd shave their heads if they reached their goal.

"I'm so inspired by our kids, they do great things. We thought this would be a fun way to motivate them," says school counselor Steve Larsen.

The money raised will go towards funding for interns at the hospital, helping pay for education programs and new cancer treatments.

"They taught us that if you have a goal and you can reach that goal, in tough economic times like these we have all learned a big lesson. This is the most money that any school has ever raised," says former Kiwanis president Marcy Priest.

The school hopes to make this an annual event, and raise even more money next year.
