Crawdads crawl into Lakeside

LAKESIDE, Ore. -Call them crayfish, crawfish or crawdads, either way they're overflowing in Lakeside during their first ever Annual Crawdad Festival.

Celebrating a unique crustacean to the coast, more than 800 pounds of Louisiana Crawfish are boiling over in Lakeside through the weekend, as are the drinks, music and friendly competitions.

Joseph Pepper, who initiated this event , says crawfish are often referred to as a fresh-water lobster. And while they can look a little intimidating, Pepper says you can't be afraid to tear into one and get a little messy.

"Well you pinch the tail away from the head, you suck the butter out of the head and you shuck the tail and you eat the tail like a shrimp," says Pepper.

And with folks lining up for their first or even second servings Friday night, they appeared to be a big hit.

The Annual Lakeside Crawdad Festival will continue through the weekend, with a street fair, crawdad races and treasure run, among other fun activities.
