Kelcy McKenna Signs with Arizona State University

College recruiting has officially started, and one of the area's star athletes signed a national letter of intent Wednesday at North Bend High School.

Star athlete, Kelcy McKenna was joined by friends and family in North Bend's Hall of Fame, to sign a letter of intent to attend Arizona State University under a full-ride tennis scholarship.

McKenna says, "It starts in the fall of next year and they actually give you a five year scholarship. With athletes it's really hard to finish in four with all the travelling, especially as an education major."

McKenna is a three-time state champion in tennis, is nationally ranked number 14 in the girls 18's and has been playing competitively since she was eleven.

After officially visiting other schools across the country from the University of North Carolina to Georgia Tech, McKenna ultimately chose ASU based on the tennis team's solid number five ranking in the PAC-10, and the overall atmosphere of the campus.

McKenna says, "During the visit you get to meet all the players. The first night I stayed with a freshman in the dorms and the second night I stayed with three of the teammates in an apartment. You definetly get to meet them and see all of their personalities, and that's definetly another big factor if you get along with the girls."

McKenna is choosing to focus only on her tennis career, making this volleyball season at North Bend her last.
