Upcoming free hazardous waste collection day
By Nicole Plascencia KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore.- Things like pesticides, paint thinners and sealants can sometimes pile up in your garage and unfortunately those types of things cannot just be tossed out into the trash, so the city of Coos Bay and the DEQ is having a hazardous waste collection day this upcoming Saturday, May 30Th from 8AM-4PM. Folks at the Coos Watershed Association encourage people to take advantage, especially if your home is in a flood plain region. AmeriCorps volunteer Marley Bice at the Coos Watershed Association says if a river were to flood then there is a possibility that these chemicals would be introduced into the ground water or that bay itself and a lot of the chemicals are toxic to humans and fish. Bice adds that these products are not only hazardous to the environment but can also pose a threat to an animal or a child, "every year thousands of dogs and cats get poisoned by antifreeze because it tastes sweet and there's the danger of that with every chemical." There are some items that they will not be taking and those are radio-actives, explosives, latex paint or ammunition. Again, the drop off location will be at the Coos Bay K-Mart, Saturday, May 30Th from 8AM-4PM. |
