SALEM, ORE - The State seems to be slowly dipping its foot into the figurative pool of Marine Reserves, as the Oregon House has approved establishment of the first two Marine Reserves and the funding to keep discussing the creation of four more.

Thursday's unanimous vote in the House was a far cry from the bitter back-and-forth arguing that has gone on since 2002.

The two pilot Reserves will be set near Depot Bay and Port Orford. Coos Bay Representative Arnie Roblan said the fact that the two reserves are small and primarily for research helped swing fishermen and coastal groups that had been concerned about the Reserves would impact their ability to make a living.

The Bill would grab a Million dollars from damages awarded over the New Carissa shipwreck to implement the recommendations of the Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Council, which spent eight months developing consensus.
