COOS BAY, ORE - It's safety first for all drivers with children on board, as more folks than ever before turn out for a free inspection of their children's car seats.

A number of agencies came together recently to offer free child safety checks.

The event was held on Wednesday at the Wal-Mart parking lot in Coos Bay. And, according to the Coos Bay Police Department, nearly 50 seats were inspected by technicians.

They were also able to give hands-on advice about common problems adults face when strapping their children into their car seat. Technician Tina Winfrey says "They have to be strapped tight to the vehicle, with either the lap belt or the seat belt, and they have to be tight and stay tight."

Officer Tim West says he noticed a need for this type of inspection just by observation during his patrols. He says this is a good way for people to get assistance without worrying about getting into trouble.

The event also offered free bike and skateboard helmets for children, as well as raffle giveaways.
