BANDON, Ore. - Hoping to revitalize their downtown area, the City of Bandon is selected from a group of communities in the state, to be a part of a special program, aimed at transforming a city's downtown commercial district while preserving it's historical value.

Bandon was selected earlier this month to be a part of the Oregon Main Street Program's "Transforming Downtown Program."

The Main Street Program recognizes towns that have special historic value and an interest in revitalizing their historic districts to be economically viable.

The city and the Old Town Merchants Association were approached by the Main Street coordinator, and were selected after a lengthy application process.

"You can't be a Main Street community without having participation and by-in from everyone, it's a city-wide benefit but it focuses on the commercial district in old town," says Anne Sobbota, Vice President of the Old Town Merchants Association.

The program will provide Bandon, with access to architectural firms, and other groups to help draw up and plan what their re-development will be.

"It's basically what I would consider a spring board so we can help ourselves, build that foundation so to speak," says Julie Miller, Executive Director with the Bandon Chamber of Commerce.

The city is looking for volunteers to be a part of their Main Street Program board.
