Roses bloom at annual show

NORTH BEND, Ore. - Showing off their beautiful blooms, the Southwestern Oregon Rose Society holds their annual Rose Show at the Pony Village Mall over the weekend.

Competitors from around the South Coast entered their blooms in the judged competition and show.

With 112 categories, and countless varieties, the show provided folks an opportunity to see a wide array of roses.

Rose Show Chairman Ed Kreutzer says the judges are looking for some very specific things when judging a rose.

"They're looking for how close that rose is to the perfect rose for that variety. And then they deduct points off for its, if the rose is too far open, if the foliage isn't good enough, its go disease on the foliage."

Roses in each category are judged on a point system.

Kreutzer says growing perfect roses on the South Coast has it's ups and downs.

"We have a lot of problems with fungus diseases because were so wet. But on the other hand we have better color than say inland, where the sun is hotter and it bleaches a lot of the color out. So we get more intense color but we do have more disease problems."

Kreutzer says the Southwestern Oregon Rose Society is always looking for more members.
