COOS BAY, Ore. - Walking for their loved ones, friends, and themselves, cancer patients, survivors, and supporters laced up their shoes and walked all day and night, at the 15th annual Coos Bay/North Bend Relay For Life.
The 24 hour celebration was held at the Sunset Middle School track in Coos Bay over the weekend. Cancer patient Jerrold Wyatt, was diagnosed with prostate cancer one year ago, he says he can't stress enough, the importance of regular prostate exams. "I didn't have too good of a mental outlook when I first found out about it, but now I got a good mental outlook and I'm trying to help people who don't have it yet by saying make sure they do a psa on you every six months or more." The events kicked off with a survivors celebration and opening ceremonies lead by Grand Marshall Gordon Everett, who is battling stage four non-small cell lung cancer. "To fight, to smile, to live each moment as it comes, that is courage. Since being diagnosed with stage-four non-small cell lung cancer, just four months ago, my husband Gordon has demonstrated that level of courage, passion and determination each and every day," said his wife Tonya. All the money raised from this event, goes to cancer research, education and patient services, early detection and advocacy. |
