Fourth of July fireworks safety
By Kristina Nelson, KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore. - Fourth of July is just days away, and local fire officials are offering some tips on how to stay safe and legal this holiday when playing with fireworks. The fourth is one of the busiest times for Coos Bay Fire Department. Coos Bay Fire Chief Stan Gibson says only buy fireworks from Oregon permitted fireworks retailers and stands. And when you light your fireworks, you want to keep a close eye on them. "Make sure that whenever you use fireworks you have adult supervision. Make sure you have water available and make sure whenever there is children using the fireworks, you're watching them, making sure they're doing it in a safe fashion." Oregon law bans possession, use or sale of fireworks that fly, explode, or travel more than six feet on the ground or 12 inches into the air. Also fireworks cannot be used in state parks, beaches and in federal parks and forests. And if you use illegal fireworks, there can be consequences. "Police departments can confiscate any illegal fireworks. There's also, if you start a fire, there's also a way that we can re-coup the cost because you were misusing fireworks and so there can be some pretty strict penalties for someone who is misusing them." Gibson says your best bet is to head to Downtown Coos Bay or one of the many other locations hosting free evening fireworks shows this Fourth of July. Most Popular
