Teams from Hawaii, Washington compete in local baseball tournament

COOS BAY, Ore. - All this week, young baseball players from around the west have been perfecting their game and forming friendships at a special tournament being held at Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Two teams from Washington, one from Hawaii and one local team are participating in the week-long baseball event, that culminates with a tournament which kicked off Friday, and runs through Saturday.

The tournament is being put on by Enfuego Sports, who have hosted similar tournaments in Corvallis and other areas around the west.

Tournament organizer Steve Avila, says the goal is to promote education through baseball.

"I think it's important to get kids out of their comfort zone and learn what other parts of this country and world have to offer, especially in baseball, it's a common sport for everybody."

All week, the out of state teams have stayed in the dorms on the SOCC campus.

Local coach Dale Inskeep, and Dean Soto, head coach of the Hawaii 808 Dragons, say the experience that all the kids receive from playing teams outside the area is great.

"Culturally it's great to see kids from out of the area, the kids have started some friendships. When you see baseball programs in other areas, you learn new things, you build ideas, " says Inskeep.

The tournament wraps up Saturday at the Southwestern campus.

It is free to the public.
