Big waves break on the jetties, 'Watch from a safe distance'
By Tim Novotny, KCBY News
COOS BAY, Ore. -With Thursday night's storm a distant memory, people flocked to look-out areas along the South Coast Friday to get a peak at the show being put on by mother nature.
From above, at the Coast Guard Lookout Station at Coos Head, and below, along the South Jetty, folks gathered throughout the day to check out the enormous waves near Bastendorf Beach in Charleston. According to the United States Coast Guard, waves were breaking at 20 to 25 feet this afternoon but they warn that bigger waves are expected this weekend. It's a good chance to check out the show, but officials warn that you should do it from a safe distance. You should avoid jetties where waves can sweep you off into deadly rip currents and other exposed structures, as these will likely be regularly inundated by the heavy surf. A High Surf Warning remains in effect until Four pm on Sunday. |
