Wave Energy is coming to Reedsport
By Erica Rush, KCBY NewsREEDSPORT, Ore. -The City of Reedsport will be the driving force behind a new Wave Energy System, generated by a big buoys off the shore. On Friday, City and Public Officials, as well as Ocean Power Technologies held a small gathering at the Discovery Center in Reedsport to announce they'll be working with Oregon Iron Works, out of Portland, to design the first buoy. It's proposed to be 150 feet long, 40 feet wide and about 200-tons, placed a few miles off shore, near Gardner. The project is expected to be completed by September of next year and cost just under $4 million. Construction, moving, and maintaining the buoys is expected to create at least a dozen local jobs, including the service of Sause Bros in Coos Bay. OPT will monitor the first buoy, and its effects on the marine life before they're approved for phase two, which would include nine more buoys at an equivalent 150-kilowatts apiece. Most Popular |
