New laws for transporting metal
By Nicole Plascencia KCBY NewsCOOS BAY, Ore.- At Marshfield Bargain House in Coos Bay, a number of precautions are already set in place to make sure scrap metal being dropped off is legal. Salesman Dave Rutledge says documents have to be signed, photo ID is needed and the shop itself take a photo as well. But the state has taken measures into their own hands by approving a bill making a number of changes and amendments to state statues and creating crimes including one related to the transportation of metal property to a scrap metal business. After January 1, anyone transporting metal on a public highway with the intent to take it to a scrap metal business has to have a metal transportation certificate. "Unlawfully Transporting Metal Property" is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $1,250 and/or a maximum of 30 days in jail." The certificate can be found at www.oregon.gov/osp |
