REMOTE, Ore. - For the second time in three days, an accident on State Highway 42 in eastern Coos County near the town of Remote, has taken a life.

Oregon State Police said four vehicles were involved in a crash that resulted in the death of 74-year-old Sigrid Wilma Wheeler of Coos Bay.

Three other people were injured, but they were not life threatening injuries.

O.S.P. Sergeant Steve Mitchell said the accident happened just after 9:30a.m. Saturday morning, when a 2003 Dodge pickup driven by Brett Dean Bishop, age 25, from Warrenton, was westbound negotiating a curve, crossing a bridge when he lost control due to icy conditions. The Dodge pickup crossed the eastbound lane, crashed into a guardrail and then sideswiped an eastbound 2002 Honda CRV driven by Courtney Herold, age 23, of Prineville.

The pickup continued in the eastbound lane and crashed head-on with a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Ronald Beck age 58, from Prosser, Washington. The force of the impact pushed the Chrysler backwards into a 2004 Nissan Quest van driven by Julianne Tipton, age 55, from Bandon.

Wheeler was a passenger in the left rear seat of the Chrysler. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers identified as Sarah Helen Beck, age 54, and Amber Nicole Olson, age 22, both of Prosser, were transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg where they were treated and released.

Another passenger, Robert D. Beck, age 25, also from Prosser, was transported to Mercy Medical Center with minor injuries.

Driver Ronald Beck, received minor injuries, but was not transported. All those in the PT Cruiser except for the deceased victim were confirmed wearing seat belts.

There were no other injuries in the other vehicles.

"Obviously the weather is playing a big part in this," said Sgt. Mitchell, "and any time you have long bridges like this, the bridge goes across the Coquille River right here, bridges are the first thing to ice up."

OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation.

Coos County Sheriff's Office, O.D.O.T., Bridge Fire Department and Myrtle Point Ambulance responded and assisted at the scene. Traffic was down to one lane for about 5 hours.

A Bakersfield, Cal. man died on that same corner Thursday morning, in a single-vehicle accident when his pickup crashed and flipped over, after sliding on the icy bridge.
