Watch for online tax scammers
By Nicole Plascencia KCBY NewsNORTH BEND, ORE - As tax season kicks into high gear, the Oregon Attorney General's office is warning taxpayers to watch out for fraudulent tax preparers. They say every year scammers prey on taxpayers, stealing refunds and leaving them with significant tax liabilities, but these days most scams are getting to taxpayers via e-mail. Maddy Gaoiran, with Bayview Accounting, says don't trust those that say they are from the IRS. She says the IRS never, ever e-mails. The Board of Tax Practitioners is also asking folks to be wary of tax preparers who say they can get you larger than normal refunds. Oregon is the only state that regulates tax professionals through competency and ethics standards. To verify that your tax preparer is licensed with the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners, go to the website oregon.gov/otpb. Most Popular |
